Formation of Self-Help Groups
The RISE has started the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in the year of 2001 onwards. The RISE has facilitated the women to form SHGs themselves by conducting systematic trainings and periodical meetings. The leaders were selected and equipped with various required basic knowledge, skills and managerial decision-making skills. The volunteers of RISE with the support of bank officials and financial institutions have helped the SHG members to pool resources in terms of knowledge and finance from different institutions and government. The accessibility to financial situations among the women is increased to greater level. Meanwhile, the repayment attitude has changed in such a way that the members are repaying their debts periodically and timely without delay in the banks and other institutions.
RISE has formed so far 40 SHGs in Palani, Thoppampatti and Oddanchatram Panchayhat Union areas. These groups have availed the loan to the tune of 40 lakhs worth of loan altogether and opened a small micro level income generating units of their own. These businesses started and run by the women are going on well and beneficiaries have acquired experiences by running them.

Awareness through Cultural Media
Cultural media is a powerful tool for communication and education, reaching diverse audiences and making information more relatable and accessible. The RISE has taken this unique activity with the purpose of creating awareness to ignorant rural villagers. In order to create awareness through media RISE has formed a cultural troop named ‘LEMORIA CULTURAL TROUP’. The members in the troop are properly trained with professionally qualified and experienced trainers. The group members will conduct cultural events in the villages.
The subject matters covered during the cultural events are of importance of education, health and sanitation, herbal medicines, leadership qualities and government schemes. The members perform the events twice in a month in villages with the help of local Self-Help groups.

Health and Alternative Medicine Awareness Meetings
There is no permanent recovery for the patients taking in Allopathic medicines which are making negative side effects in human biological systems and their functions. The herbal medicines were in practice right from the ages of our ancestors. But Allopathic medicines were successful in the beginning. They have contained fertilizers, insecticides and other toxic chemicals. As the result, these external elements make the biological systems to get victimised greatly and their routine normal functions are damaged. Consequently, numerous diseases are emerging day by day. With the effect of this trend, the people especially poor people meet high amount cash drain in terms of cost of medicines, treatment cost, consultation fees, laboratory examination fees and other travel and stay expenses.
In order to create awareness on these issues, RISE conducts awareness meetings on the demerits of Allopathic medicines and positive impacts of other alternate medicines including Siddha, Ayurveda, Homeo and Unani. These meetings are being conducted at their village setting when the Field Staff would visit monthly to the SHGs.These meetings cover health check-ups, workshops on preventive healthcare, and information about alternative medicine options that are accessible and culturally appropriate.

Ecological Farming Sustainable Agriculture
The Green Revolution started four decades ago, has been generating adverse effects in communities, cropping patterns, cultivation practices, harvesting ultimately the livelihoods of peasants. Above all, it has greatly affected eco system. The reasons behind these everlasting issues are that the excessive application of fertilisers, pesticides and other chemicals in the cultivable lands. The diminishing rate of live stocks in the villages is contributing for the low production of cow dung in the farms. It is therefore, the RISE volunteers encourage to form ECO CLUBS in village panchayats.
During the visits of RISE staff, the awareness is being created for the members in the club. Meetings are organised for the club members twice in a month. In order to restore the situations advises are offered so that the farmers should replace all the present chemicals with traditional natural manure and abandon mechanisation in their farms. The subjects on organic farming, composting with special application of vermi compost, agro forestry, tree plantation, other techniques that conserve soil fertility, reduction of chemical inputs and promote biodiversity are covered during the visit of staff. The needed farmers are supplied with tree seedlings during the meetings.

Watershed Training Programs for Small and Marginal Farmers
THOPPAMPATTI, is one of the important Panchayat union in Palani Taluk where in RISE is facilitating SHGs. The rainfall rate is very low. The terrain is highly dry. Deforestations is also high in this region. There is no dams and river only some tanks are existing in the area. As the result, the size of cultivable lands is minimal. The staff of RISE sensitize analytically the causes and effects of this present conditions in the environment to the women in the SHGs and other farmers in the villages.
During the meetings, the causes for this situation including the absence of sufficient water harvesting facilities, improper water shed management, deforestation, encroachment in water bodies and canals are beingen listed and sensitized to the people as the major causes for these present problems. With the application of tools of PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL (PRA) the staff of RISE help the SHG members and farmers to find out sustainable solutions. To bring back traditional way of water shed management system which was headed by AYAKATTU THARAR MOVEMENT, women and farmers right now are approaching the concerned government officials.

Skills Training for SHGs
This activity involves organizing workshops or courses on various skills such as handicrafts, small-scale entrepreneurship and vocational skills tailored to the community's needs. RISE has been conducting skill training courses for women and adolescent girls in tailoring, arif decoration works in women garments and children garments. Type writing training was also conducted for school going children and adolescent girls. These trainings are being conducted for the past four years in two different locations viz A. Kalayamputhur and Aayakudi. About 85 beneficiaries have acquired trainings in both the training centres. The purpose of the skills training conducted is to equip the skills in various type of works and thereby to upgrade the skills so that the trained women can avail employments in private firm, companies and garment units and earn for their livelihood.
About 60 percent of the benefitted women are now placed in jobs and earn a decent income. The rest are undertaking self employment enterprises of their own and have become as an owner and employer. Only a few are having the tailoring machines in their homes and furnishing their own dress materials needs. It is appreciable that a greater number of schools going and adolescent girls are undergoing training with the purpose of availing jobs in government sector.

Climate Change Awareness
RISE prioritises awareness creation on the climate change including global warming, out of all other its activities. It includes educational sessions for SHG members, group discussions among them, and in conducting Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA). Seasonality Mapping is conducted among the group members so as to analyse the present trend of climate change including global warming. This activity is conducted by trained staff and volunteers for the past two years. In addition, other changes in rainfall, yield in agriculture, emerge of diseases and the quality of agricultural produces are also taken in to analysis during the awareness session. These sessions are conducted for SHG members twice in a month.
SHG members thereby are encouraged to follow sustainable and eco-friendly practices in farms, homes and in every moment in their life. RISE would be never leaving any problem without suggesting any practical solutions. Accordingly, RISE advises the members to take up tree plantation actively which is the best remedy to restore the present climatic conditions. The staff of the organisation keep on insisting that every SHG member should plant trees in farms and homes as many numbers as they are possible.
